June 10, 2022– While students enjoy the start of summer vacation, Rowland Water District employees are a step ahead, helping many of them prepare for the next school year.

The “RWD – Our Community, Our Family” program presented a $6,000 check to Shoes That Fit, a Claremont-based charity that provides athletic shoes for children in need. The money was raised entirely through a “money war” among employees. The intense but friendly challenge resulted in a check more than five times larger than the employees’ initial donation to the program in August 2021.

“Our staff is inspired by the opportunity to help children and meet such a basic need as shoes,” Rowland Water District General Manager Tom Coleman said. “This substantial donation demonstrates how our commitment to the community extends beyond water service.”

The donation will allow Shoes That Fit to purchase 200 pairs of name-brand sneakers. The footwear will be distributed during an event this Summer to students who attend schools within the Rowland Unified School District. RWD will be present to volunteer and distribute the shoes to the students.

“Collecting donations for such a worthy cause energized all of us, knowing how much of a difference this would make for the children who receive these shoes,” Field Operations Supervisor Allen Davidson said. “When children don’t have to worry about what they will wear, they can focus on just being kids.”

The “RWD – Our Community, Our Family” program was created to provide Rowland Water District staff with opportunities to make contributions and participate in volunteer activities that help others in the communities where they live and work.
