Enriching Projects Supplement Classroom Curriculum

Rowland Water District (RWD) welcomes the new school year with a lineup of in-classroom water education programs, offering students real-world experiences in water learning.

Much of the interactive schedule will be launched in partnership with The Public Water Agencies Group (PWAG) Conservation and Education Team (CET), an association of 17 water purveyors across all of Los Angeles County that focuses on water issues outreach.

The water activities offered by RWD are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core and the California Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI). These presentations provide a field trip-like experience within the classroom. Events scheduled for the 2023-2024 school year include:

  • Mini Solar Challenge — Fifth and sixth graders learn stewardship of natural resources in an assignment that culminates in the building of a mini solar-powered boat.
  • Splash Cash — With this teacher grant, educators may be awarded up to $1,200 for the purchase of creative water-related educational software, activities or supplies to assist with the classroom or virtual learning environment and promote water education.
  • Scholar Dollar — Selected college-bound seniors are awarded a $1,000 scholarship (payable to an educational institution upon proof of enrollment) for their answers to a conservation-focused writing prompt.
  • Water Bottle Filling Station Installation — RWD is proud to expand its program to install clean, safe drinking water bottle filling stations at local schools, this year adding two area high schools.

“RWD is dedicated to promoting water awareness and preservation within the community, and we know it starts in our schools,” RWD General Manager Tom Coleman said. “Our water education programs teach students to be water-wise and make environmentally sustainable choices to help ensure water reliability for generations to come.”
