Local Water District Provides Two High Schools with Water Bottle Filling Stations

More schools are making a splash in sustainability by joining Rowland Water District (RWD) in an inventive initiative to upgrade old drinking fountains with efficient water bottle-filling stations by 2024.

Santana and Nogales High Schools are the newest participants of the What’s In Your Bottle? program, receiving one and two filling stations, respectively.

“We are excited to bring this program to Nogales and Santana High Schools and provide a sustainable solution for their hydration needs,” said RWD General Manager Tom Coleman. “Our hope is that this resource will encourage schools in this and surrounding communities to be more mindful of their environmental impact and join us in promoting a greener future.”

The What’s In Your Bottle? initiative aims to promote an eco-friendly lifestyle by encouraging the use of reusable water bottles. The filling stations will make it easier for students and staff to stay hydrated throughout the day while reducing the number of single-use plastic water bottles in landfills with a safe, contact-free water source.

Since January 2020, more than eight fill stations have been built at no cost to schools in the RUSD and RWD service areas. Two new school sites are selected each year, with a goal of converting all schools by 2024. Following the completion of RUSD schools, RWD plans to reach out to Hacienda La Puente USD schools within RWD’s service area to begin renovations. These small steps make a big difference for the planet and future generations.
