January 31, 2022 – Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) selected a Jellick Elementary School fifth grader from Rowland Heights to be highlighted in their regional “Water is Life” calendar. The fifth grader had previously won Rowland Water District’s annual water art contest, and is now being showcased by the District’s wholesale water provider, MWD.

Angel Rios participated in the annual contest as part of Mrs. Anderson’s class and competed with elementary school students in Rowland’s service area.

“It’s such a pleasure for our District to witness the talent and creativity of all of the participating students,” said General Manager Tom Coleman. “One of the best ways to get children to think about the importance of our most valuable natural resource is by engaging them through hands-on and meaningful learning opportunities.”

Each year, RWD encourages K-12th grade students in the service area to illustrate the value of water, showing how to use it wisely or conveying its importance. From all the entries received and judged, six students’ creations were sent to MWD for consideration in their regional poster contest, which includes students from Southern California schools.

The following students advanced to the MWD contest:

 K-3rd Grade
1st Place – Isaac Choy, Blandford Elementary School, 1st Grade
2nd Place – Mia Luong, Blandford Elementary School, 1st Grade
o 3rd Place – Stanley Liu, Blandford Elementary School, 1st Grade

4th-6th Grade
1st Place – Angel Rios, Jellick Elementary School, 5th Grade
2nd Place – Amber Yu, Blandford Elementary School, 4th Grade

RWD representatives judge entries based on creativity, spelling and originality with the top student posters receiving an Amazon gift card. The first 10 teachers to submit a full classroom of entries received an art kit.

MWD’s “Water is Life” calendar showcases student art that carries a conservation message. The calendar is distributed to roughly 13,000 recipients each year.

“Giving students opportunities to explore their creative side and learn about water in the process – that’s a win for everyone,” said Brittnie Van De Car, the District’s Education and Community Outreach Coordinator.

Rowland offers a variety of educational programs and resources for teachers and students at no cost. For more information about the Poster Contest or Rowland Water District’s other educational programs, contact Brittnie Van De Car, bvandecar@rwd.org, or visit rwd.org
